Palma: US has met Colombian officials on Monomeros license

The United States and Hanwha Shipping have announced a significant deal that underscores the U.S. government's efforts to revive domestic shipbuilding. Hanwha Shipping, a U.S. subsidiary of Korean shipbuilder Hanwha Ocean, has ordered a liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier valued at approximately $252 million from its own Pennsylvania-based unit, Hanwha Philly Shipyard [1].

Under the agreement, the ship will be built in South Korea and flagged in the United States. The vessel is slated for delivery in the first half of 2028. The deal marks a strategic move as the U.S. works to expand its fleet of commercial and military vessels and comply with new regulations [1].

The contract is valued at 348 billion South Korean won ($252.03 million) and includes an option for an additional vessel. Most of the construction will take place at Hanwha Ocean's plant in Geoje, South Korea. Workers from Philly Shipyard will travel to Geoje for training, while Philly Shipyard will oversee regulatory compliance and safety certifications required for U.S. registry [1].

This agreement is seen as a "first step" in building out U.S. shipyard capacity, according to Jefferies shipping analyst Omar Nokta. The U.S. is the largest LNG exporter, with a market share of nearly 25% [1].

Earlier this year, the United States Trade Representative announced that LNG producers would be required to transport 1% of their exports on U.S.-built ships starting in April 2029, escalating to 15% by April 2047 and beyond [1].
