Ouster's Growth Story Is Real. Its Cash Problem Is Bigger.
Ouster and Flyability have been working together for over five years. The partnership produces real, measurable results — drones mapping volcanic tubes at 180°C, glacial caves, sewers, and cement factories in conditions no human should enter. At INTERGEO 2026 in Munich, they demonstrated the latest version: Flyability's Elios 3 drone with Ouster's OS0 digital lidar, capturing accurate 3D models in the dark, GPS-denied spaces where industrial inspection matters most.
The press release reads like product validation. It is, for the partnership. For the stock, the story is elsewhere.
Ouster (OUST) trades at a $2.6 billion market cap. It generates roughly $200 million in annual revenue and burns $82.5 million annually in free cash flow. The company is not profitable. It has never been profitable. The stock is up 67% year-to-date from a 52-week low of $16.40. The market is pricing in a future where Ouster's "Physical AI sensing platform" — lidar, cameras, and software fused together — captures meaningful share across robotics, autonomous vehicles, warehouse automation, and smart infrastructure.
The question for investors is not whether the technology works. It works. The question is whether growth fast enough to justify the valuation can arrive before the cash runs out.
The real growth engine
Ouster's financial trajectory has been genuinely impressive. The company posted 14 consecutive quarters of product revenue growth. Q2 2026 brought $54.6 million in revenue, up 56% year-over-year, with GAAP gross margins expanding to 49%. It shipped more than 17,000 lidar and camera units in that quarter alone. Full-year 2025 revenue was $169 million, including approximately $23 million in mostly one-time IP royalties, with $147 million in product revenue.

The growth is not coming from drone inspection. Industrial inspection, the Flyability use case, is a niche application within a niche vertical. The bulk of Ouster's volume comes from warehouse automation, yard logistics, intelligent transportation, and smart infrastructure — applications where companies like Amazon, DHL, and port operators are deploying hundreds or thousands of lidar sensors for autonomous mobile robots and automated guided vehicles.
Ouster acquired Stereolabs in February 2026 for $35 million, adding stereo camera technology and AI perception software. The ZED X Nano camera launched in April and was described by management as "the most successful launch in Stereolabs history." This move broadens OusterOUST-- from a pure lidar company to a combined lidar-plus-camera sensing platform, which matters because the robotics market increasingly demands sensor fusion — lidar for depth and 3D structure, cameras for color and recognition.
The cash problem
Here is where the numbers change the story.
Ouster burned $53.8 million in operating cash over the trailing twelve months, with free cash flow at -$82.5 million after capital expenditures of $28.7 million. That is a free cash flow margin of -37%. The company holds roughly $263 million in total liquid assets — $91.8 million in cash, $169.3 million in short-term investments, and $1.4 million in restricted cash as of June 30, 2026. Operating expenses for full-year 2025 were $157 million, up from $145 million in 2024.
At current burn rates, that cash position lasts roughly three years. Three years in which the company needs to grow from roughly $200 million in revenue to the point where its expanding gross margins (currently 49% GAAP) can cover operating expenses that sit near $157 million annually and growing. Rough math: at a 49% gross margin, Ouster needs roughly $320 million in revenue just to cover $157 million in operating expenses — and that assumes operating expenses don't grow, which they are unlikely not to.
Management's own long-term framework targets 30-50% annual revenue growth and 35-40% GAAP gross margins, with operating expense growth of 5-8% from 2025 levels. The margin target is notably below current realized margins of 49%, which suggests management expects some compression as product mix shifts and one-time royalties fade. If that guidance plays out, the path to operating breakeven is real but takes time — and time costs cash.
What the valuation is buying
A $2.6 billion market cap on $200 million in revenue with negative operating margins means the stock trades at roughly 13 times trailing revenue. For context, that multiple on a company that loses money at an operating level of $76 million per year is not a value play. It is a growth option.
The market is betting that Ouster sits at the bottom of the robotics value chain as a foundational sensing supplier — the way Texas Instruments sits at the bottom of the electronics chain as an analog chip supplier. If the robotics market explodes as its proponents claim — with warehouse automation, autonomous delivery, and smart cities deploying millions of sensors — Ouster could grow to $750 million to $1 billion in revenue within a few years. At that scale, with 45-50% gross margins and disciplined operating expense growth, profitability becomes achievable. The stock could then justify its current valuation through earnings, not just revenue multiples.
But the opposite is also true. If robotics deployment slows, if lidar faces sustained price pressure from Chinese competitors like Hesai and Robosense, or if the Stereolabs acquisition does not accelerate adoption, the company burns through its cash while growing into smaller revenue. At that point, dilution becomes the only option to extend the runway.
The company has $103.5 million in total debt against $371 million in equity. No default risk here — the balance sheet is clean relative to the cash position. But debt is not a solution when revenue cannot cover operating expenses; equity issuance is.
The REV8 upgrade
Ouster launched REV8, described as the world's first native color digital lidar, combining color and 3D data in a single sensor with increased range, precision, and resolution. Flyability is evaluating REV8 to enhance SLAM, mapping, and flight-path data capture for the Elios 3.
From an engineering standpoint, native color lidar eliminates the registration error that comes from stitching separate camera and lidar data streams — a real problem in industrial inspection where centimeter-level accuracy matters. Whether REV8 commands a premium price that improves Ouster's margins, or whether it cannibalizes OS0 sales at lower margins, will determine whether this product cycle accelerates or decelerates the path to profitability. That answer will come in the next few quarterly reports.
The investment case
Ouster is not a company you buy for its partnerships. The Flyability relationship demonstrates the technology works in extreme conditions — lava tubes with temperatures exceeding 180°C, freezing glacial caves, and Chernobyl. That is credibility, not a growth driver. The growth drivers are warehouse automation, autonomous mobile robots, and the broader question of whether physical AI — robots that navigate and perceive the real world — deploys at scale and speed.
What you are buying in Ouster is an option on that deployment happening. The company has real product momentum, expanding margins, a growing installed base, and 14 quarters of consecutive revenue growth. The Stereolabs acquisition adds a camera vision layer that makes the platform more complete. The technical execution has been solid.
What you are not buying is financial stability. The company loses money at every level — operating, cash flow, and earnings. The $2.6 billion market cap demands that revenue growth sustain above 40% annually while margins expand or hold steady, with no major price wars in the lidar market. That is a high bar, but not an unreasonable one for a company in a market that was valued at $1.12 billion in 2025 and is forecast to reach $7.15 billion by 2034.
The stock is a conviction play on physical AI infrastructure, priced as though that conviction is already partially correct. If you believe autonomous robots are deploying faster than the consensus timeline, Ouster is a leveraged way to express that view. If you believe the deployment takes longer, the cash burn makes the stock expensive in a different way — not because the technology fails, but because the company runs out of runway before the market arrives.
