Oracle and OpenAI announce partnership to build 4.5 gigawatts of additional Stargate data center space in the United States
Oracle and OpenAI have entered into a strategic partnership to develop an additional 4.5 gigawatts of Stargate data center capacity in the U.S. This expansion will create new jobs, accelerate America's reindustrialization, and bolster the country's AI leadership. The agreement marks a significant milestone for Stargate, OpenAI's AI infrastructure platform, which aims to deliver the benefits of AI to everyone.
The new partnership, combined with the existing Stargate I site in Abilene, Texas, will bring the total Stargate AI data center capacity under development to over 5 gigawatts, running over 2 million chips. This significant advancement is part of OpenAI's commitment to invest $500 billion into 10 gigawatts of AI infrastructure in the U.S. over the next four years. The company now expects to exceed its initial commitment, thanks to strong momentum with partners like Oracle and SoftBank [1].
The construction of the new data center capacity is expected to create over 100,000 jobs across various roles in the U.S., including direct full-time jobs for operating Stargate data centers, short-term construction roles like electricians, and indirect jobs in manufacturing and local services. This job creation aligns with the broader goal of driving economic growth and innovation through AI infrastructure [1].
Meanwhile, construction of the Stargate I site in Abilene is progressing, with parts of the facility already operational. Oracle has begun delivering the first Nvidia GB200 racks, and early training and inference workloads are being run to push the limits of OpenAI's research. The Stargate I site has already created thousands of jobs, with more expected as operations expand [1].
The partnership with Oracle complements OpenAI's ongoing collaboration with SoftBank, which is also moving forward with strong momentum. Both partnerships are crucial for meeting OpenAI's expanding compute needs and driving the development of more capable and reliable AI tools [1].
The expansion of Stargate reflects growing interest and support for AI infrastructure, with OpenAI's vision for the platform encompassing ongoing data center partnerships with Oracle, SoftBank, and CoreWeave, as well as international investments in U.S. infrastructure through OpenAI for Countries. Microsoft will continue to provide cloud services for OpenAI, including through Stargate [1].
The partnership between Oracle and OpenAI is a testament to the critical role AI infrastructure plays in driving innovation, economic growth, and national competitiveness, with strong support from partners, governments, and investors worldwide, including leadership from the White House [1].
