OpenText's 37% Margin Machine Is Growing at 3%-5%-Bullish AI Cash Cow or Value Trap?

OpenText cleared the profitability bar; growth is still the debate
OTEX looks like a high-quality software asset. OpenTextOTEX-- produced $5.2 billion of fiscal 2026 revenue and finished the year with a 36.3% adjusted EBITDA margin. In the latest reported quarter, it also printed Q2 2026 EPS of $1.01 versus roughly $0.94 estimated, a 7.46% beat. That points to a mature software platform executing well rather than a turnaround trying to find its footing.
Why bulls like the scoreboard
Bulls see a governed-data AI supplier with sticky enterprise demand, strong margins, and a balance sheet that is improving. OpenText paid down $649 million of debt in fiscal 2026 and reduced its net leverage ratio to 2.75 times. Management is also leaning into the AI conversation with the company's role as the secure data foundation in the AI stack, while saying it will increase organic investment in the core portfolio.
Why bears still have an opening
The bear case rests on growth. Fiscal 2026 total revenue rose just 1.5%, and the market's reaction suggested that the beat alone was not enough: after the EPS surprise, OTEX shares experienced a slight decline of 0.34%.
That is the real test now. Profitability is established; growth has to prove it can do more than defend the business.
Growth is slow, but the mix is improving
Margins are no longer the story. The live question is whether 3%-5% top-line momentum is mainly protecting cash generation or beginning to improve the revenue mix enough to support a better multiple.
What the quarter shows
In Q4 fiscal 2026, OpenText posted total revenue of $1.35 billion, up 2.9% year over year. Core portfolio revenue rose 5.3%, while cloud revenue within the core portfolio grew 10.7%. That suggests the older parts of the business are still weighing the top line, while the higher-value segments are growing faster.
The full-year figures tell a similar story. OpenText generated full-year core portfolio revenue of $4.0 billion, up 2.9%, and full-year cloud revenue reached $1.3 billion, up 10.3%. Full-year adjusted EBITDA margin finished at 36.3%, up 170 basis points. Margin expansion is notable here because it came while core and cloud revenue still grew.
Earnings quality and cash conversion still matter
Q4 GAAP net income rose to $156 million, while non-GAAP net income reached $299 million. GAAP diluted EPS was $0.64, and non-GAAP diluted EPS was $1.23.
The gap between GAAP and non-GAAP results means OpenText is not yet a clean SaaS-style comparison. Still, the quarter also included operating cash flow of $186 million and free cash flow of $122 million. For bulls, that bridge matters: strong margins are more valuable if they keep converting into cash.
OpenText's AI case depends on being plumbing, not packaging
OpenText is not trying to pass itself off as a point AI application. Management describes the company as the secure data foundation in the AI stack, which fits the broader product push around information management, security, and AI enablement described in company coverage such as the OpenText AI Data Platform.
If that positioning is right, the bull case rests on a few things: - Mix shift: cloud and core portfolio growth can gradually outweigh legacy drag. - Earnings durability: margins remain high even as the business keeps investing in the core. - AI relevance: governed data and document infrastructure become more valuable as enterprise AI usage expands.
The main risks are straightforward: - Total revenue is still low-single-digit growth, at 2.9% in Q4. - Free cash flow was not flawless, with free cash flow of $122 million down 1.6% in the quarter. - The AI story still needs to stay rooted in enterprise data infrastructure rather than become branding without separate monetization proof.

If you judge OpenText like a fast-growing AI application company, it can look dull. If you judge it as an enterprise information-management platform with strong margins, improving cash conversion, and cloud growth in the low-teens, the setup looks more compelling. That is the real divide in the stock today.
