OpenAI has considered launching its own web browser to challenge Google's Chrome, which has dominated the search field for more than a decade, according to people familiar with the matter.

Microsoft-backed OpenAI is considering developing a web browser that would be integrated with its chatbot ChatGPT, the people said.

OpenAI has discussed the idea with website and app developers, and is also considering using its artificial intelligence capabilities on devices made by Google's business partner Samsung, the people said. Earlier this year, OpenAI reached a similar agreement with Apple.

It is unclear when or if OpenAI will launch a browser, but the large startup has hired two former Google Chrome developers, the people said.

The U.S. Justice Department is trying to force Google to divest its Chrome browser, arguing that the company's technology is monopolistic.

The trial is set for April 2025, and the two sides will present their arguments about potential major changes to Google's business operations.
