OpenAI Simplifies AI Product Offerings in New Roadmap, CEO Altman Says

In a post on X, Altman shared that OpenAI wants to return to "magic unified intelligence," suggesting a desire to create a seamless and intuitive AI experience for users. The company plans to unify its o-series and GPT-series models, enabling systems that can use all available tools and determine optimal thinking time for tasks. This approach is expected to improve the user experience and make AI more accessible and user-friendly.

OpenAI's roadmap includes the release of GPT-4.5, internally referred to as "Orion," which will be the company's last "non-chain-of-thought model." Following this, OpenAI plans to release GPT-5 as a system that integrates a lot of its technology, including o3, in its AI-powered chatbot platform ChatGPT and API. As a result of this roadmap decision, OpenAI will no longer ship o3 as a standalone model.

When GPT-5 is available, free ChatGPT users will get unlimited chat access at the "standard intelligence setting," subject to "abuse thresholds." Plus subscribers will be able to run GPT-5 at a "higher level of intelligence," while Pro subscribers will be able to run GPT-5 at an "even higher level of intelligence." These models will incorporate voice, canvas, search, deep research, and more, according to Altman.
