OpenAI Says There Will Be Some More 'Releases' Later This Year, But 'No GPT-5'
On Thursday, OpenAI's CEO Sam Altman indicated that the company's next major artificial intelligence model might not be released this year, as the company is prioritizing existing models that focus on reasoning and problem-solving.
Participating in a Reddit AMA (Ask Me Anything), he stated the company can't ship as many things in parallel as we'd like to because they face limitations and hard decisions when allocating computing resources to many great ideas.
When a Reddit user asked about the release date for GPT-5 or its equivalent, Altman replied: We have some very good releases coming later this year, but Nothing that we are going to call GPT-5, though.
OpenAI is under pressure to continue rolling out faster and more efficient models as its competitors - from internet giants like Google to well-funded startups like Anthropic - are continuously enhancing their AI models.
Earlier this month, OpenAI completed its latest funding round with a valuation of $157 billion. In September, the company projected its annualized revenue to reach $3.7 billion this year, but losses will also amount to about $5 billion.
Additionally, during the AMA, Reddit users asked other OpenAI executives about the release dates for other new models and features, including the video generation model Sora, a new version of the image generation model DALL-E, ChatGPT's Camera Mode, and the visual capabilities of the Advanced Voice Mode (AVM) in ChatGPT.
Regarding the delay in releasing Sora, a user asked: Is it due to the amount of computing/time required for inference or due to safety? In response, OpenAI's Head of Product, Kevin Weil, said: We need to perfect the model, get safety/impersonation/other things right, and scale compute.
Regarding the next version of DALL-E, Altman wrote, The next update will be worth the wait, but there is no release plan yet. He added that there is also no specific release date for AVM Vision. OpenAI's Vice President of Engineering, Srini Narayanan, wrote that there is no definite release date for ChatGPT's Camera Mode either.
Earlier on Thursday, OpenAI introduced a search feature in the ChatGPT chatbot, allowing it to better compete with search engines like Google, Microsoft's Bing, and Perplexity.
According to the company, ChatGPT Search will enable users of the chatbot to easily access timely information, including the latest sports scores, stock quotes, news, weather, etc., just like searching on the internet. This feature is supported by real-time web searches and partnerships with news and data providers.
In response to a user's question about whether ChatGPT Search uses Bing as the behind-the-scenes search engine, Narayanan wrote: We use a range of services, with Bing being an important one.
Finally, Reddit users also discussed the controversy surrounding OpenAI's transition to a for-profit structure and a series of high-profile executive departures.
Narayanan responded: While we are sad to not have some of the people we had worked with closely, we have an incredibly talented team and many new amazing people who have joined us recently as well, and we keep shipping which is really important.
