This six-month full-time program targets researchers from fields like physics and neuroscience who are interested in AI, rather than those who already have extensive AI research experience. The program offers an annual salary of $210,000, positioning itself as a more affordable option in the fiercely competitive AI talent market, where some companies offer signing bonuses in the nine-figure range.
OpenAI offers more than salary; it covers relocation expenses to San Francisco and provides comprehensive employee benefits. Almost all successful participants receive offers for full-time positions. In recruiting around 30 residency participants annually, OpenAI doesn't strictly require specific educational or work experience, but sets high technical expectations, especially in mathematics and programming.
The strategy contrasts sharply with Meta's approach, which is aggressively recruiting top AI talent with lucrative salary and signing bonuses. OpenAI's CEO Sam Altman emphasizes the importance of recruiting talent that deeply identifies with the company’s mission rather than simply offering competitive salaries as a retention strategy.
