OpenAI Rents 4.5 Gigawatts Power From Oracle For AI Development

OpenAI has recently expanded its Stargate initiative by agreeing to rent an additional 4.5 gigawatts of data center power from Oracle Corp. in the United States. This significant deal underscores the immense computational demands of advanced AI products and the critical role of data center power in their development and deployment.

The agreement is part of the broader Stargate project, a $500 billion joint venture involving giants like OpenAI, Oracle, SoftBank, and Abu Dhabi’s MGX. The project aims to extensively upgrade AI infrastructure across the US. 4.5 gigawatts is an unprecedented amount of energy. To put this into perspective, one gigawatt is equivalent to the capacity of one nuclear reactor and has the potential to provide electricity to roughly 750,000 American homes. All that power will now be directed towards Stargate, OpenAI’s project to procure computing power from Oracle for AI products.

Oracle has already constructed a massive data center in Abilene, Texas, for OpenAI, in collaboration with development partner Crusoe. However, to meet the additional demand from OpenAI, Oracle will need to develop multiple data centers across the US with partners. Locations being considered for these sites include Texas, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Wyoming, in addition to expanding the Abilene site from its current power capacity of 1.2 gigawatts to about 2 gigawatts. Other sites under consideration include New Mexico, Georgia, Ohio, and Pennsylvania, although details of these plans have not been finalized.
