OpenAI has unveiled a new subscription model exclusively for the Indian market, setting the price at a competitive 399 INR per month, equivalent to approximately $4.6. This move signifies OpenAI’s strategy to deepen its engagement in India, which stands as its second-largest market by user base after the United States.
In targeting a population with over a billion internet users and a reputation for price sensitivity, OpenAI has tailored its offerings to captivate the Indian audience with more affordable pricing. The new ChatGPT Go plan enables users to send ten times more messages and generate more AI-produced images compared to the free version, thus enhancing the overall user experience by providing faster response times.
The initiative comes amid discussions earlier this year between OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and India's IT Minister regarding the development of a cost-effective AI ecosystem in the country. This speaks to OpenAI's ambition to expand its footprint further in a market poised to become its largest user base.
Nick Turley, Vice President at OpenAI and head of ChatGPT, noted the significance of affordability for consumers, emphasizing that the Go plan aims to increase accessibility to advanced AI features. The plan is expected to roll out to other regions following an evaluative period based on user feedback.
Despite not offering complimentary access, the localized and cost-effective pricing is anticipated to boost ChatGPT's subscription conversions within India. This strategic pricing is also set to capitalize on an increasingly competitive landscape in which companies like
are offering free extended service plans to attract the country’s large internet user base.
