According to Zhitong Finance, OpenAI is set to release a new artificial intelligence model called GPT-4.5. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman announced on Wednesday on social network X that the model, internally referred to as Orion, will be launched "in a few weeks." Media reported in November that Orion had not yet met the performance expectations of OpenAI. The release of GPT-4.5 will mark the end of an era for OpenAI.
The release of GPT-4.5 will mark the end of an era for OpenAI. Altman stated that the model would be the company's last model that does not use extra computing power to mimic human reasoning, which would be OpenAI's "last non-chain thinking model." OpenAI has adopted reasoning models in some newer models, including o1 and o3.
Altman said that OpenAI would combine its GPT models (which power the original ChatGPT chatbot) with its new o-series models to build an artificial intelligence system that can automatically determine how long to think before spitting out an answer. He said the goal was to simplify the experience so users wouldn't be forced to choose from increasingly complex options.
Altman acknowledged in the posts that OpenAI's product line has become complex, and the company wants to "do better" in simplifying its products. He said: "We don't like model selectors as much as users, and we want to go back to a unified intelligent experience."
After GPT-4.5, Altman said one of OpenAI's key goals is "to unify the o-series models with the GPT-series models, by creating a system that can use all our tools, that knows when to think for a long time and when not to, and that can be broadly applicable to many tasks."
Altman said OpenAI is moving forward with the GPT-5 model, which the company plans to release as an integrated system that includes o3 technology. The company has already released a smaller version of the system, called o3-mini, but has not yet released the full model.
