OpenAI is set to announce a $65 billion funding allocation on Friday: Microsoft and Nvidia are vying for a spot, but Sequoia missed the opportunity!
OpenAI, a leading company in the field of artificial intelligence, is reportedly close to completing its latest funding round, with potential investors set to decide whether to participate by Friday, according to sources familiar with the matter. The company's $6.5 billion funding target has already surpassed expectations, indicating that investor interest in participating in the round has exceeded OpenAI's planned capacity. The sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity due to sensitive information, said that the oversubscribed demand was in the tens of billions of dollars, meaning some investors may receive news on Friday that they were not selected. While OpenAI declined to comment on the matter, there are indications that several key strategic investors, including Microsoft, Nvidia, and Apple, are expected to gain investment rights.
The funding round values OpenAI at approximately $150 billion, not including the new capital. Notably, this valuation is far higher than the $86 billion valuation the company had in earlier funding rounds. Moreover, at least one prominent existing investor, Redpoint Ventures, will not participate in this round. Redpoint recently shifted its support to Safe Superintelligence Inc., a new competitor founded by Ilya Sutskever, one of OpenAI's co-founders, who left the company earlier this year under the leadership of Sam Altman.
On the other hand, existing investor Thrive Capital is leading the round and plans to invest $1.25 billion. Thrive Capital also declined to comment on the news.
Overall, OpenAI's new funding round demonstrates the market's high confidence in its artificial intelligence technology, as well as the investors' high expectations for the future potential of the field. While some investors may not be able to participate, OpenAI's funding success undoubtedly further propels its innovation and development in the field of artificial intelligence.
