OpenAI Implements Rate Limits on Image Generation Due to Studio Ghibli Trend

OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, has implemented rate limits on its image generation feature following an overwhelming response to a viral social media trend that saw users transforming images into the style of Studio Ghibli, the renowned Japanese animation studio. The trend, which involved users generating AI art in the style of Studio Ghibli's iconic films such as "Spirited Away" and "My Neighbor Totoro," quickly gained traction and led to a surge in image requests.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman initially participated in the trend by posting a portrait of himself generated by the model. However, he later acknowledged the strain this trend was placing on the company's infrastructure. "It’s super fun seeing people love images in ChatGPT but our GPUs are melting. We are going to temporarily introduce some rate limits while we work on making it more efficient," Altman stated in a post on March 27. He also mentioned that the company is working to fix issues related to image generation and that rate limits are a temporary measure to manage the load.

The rate limits are designed to help OpenAI manage the aggregate load on its infrastructure, ensuring a smooth and consistent experience for all users. According to OpenAI, if requests to the API increase dramatically, it could tax the servers and cause performance issues. By setting rate limits, the company can maintain stability and efficiency in its services.

The trend was not limited to Altman; other high-profile individuals also participated. Musk shared an image mimicking King Mufasa from Disney’s "The Lion King" holding up a Shiba Inu, while Sacks used the Studio Ghibli art style on an image of himself at an event.

The implementation of rate limits comes as OpenAI continues to expand its offerings. The company launched the upgraded image generation feature in ChatGPT-4o on March 25, which allowed users to generate images in various styles, including Studio Ghibli. Altman had previously mentioned that the company aims to release GPT-4.5 and GPT-5 in the coming weeks or months, indicating a continued focus on innovation and improvement.

The rate limits are expected to be temporary, with Altman stating that the free tier of ChatGPT will soon allow three generations per day.
