Instead, it became a focal point for criticism, as users perceived a lack of transparency and control. Many expected GPT-5 to be a single, unified model trained from scratch, not a network of models with varying capabilities stitched together [1].
The controversy revealed a growing tension between the technical realities of AI development and user expectations. Experts argue that routing is not just an OpenAI innovation—it is an industry trend. As models grow in size and complexity, routing allows for more efficient use of resources by directing tasks to the most appropriate variant. As Jiaxuan You explained, while scaling laws suggest that more data and compute lead to better models, the benefits are diminishing. The industry is likely to see a cycle of routing specialized models and attempting to unify them, driven by engineering, compute, and business constraints [1].
William Falcon of Lightning AI noted that the concept of using multiple models together has been around since 2018. OpenAI’s current emphasis on routing may reflect a greater willingness to be transparent about their approach. However, the lack of a clear leap in performance from GPT-4 to GPT-5 has left users underwhelmed, with some questioning whether the promised advancements are being overstated [1].
Despite the initial backlash, experts believe model routing could define the next phase of AI. The key will be refining the routing process to ensure consistency and transparency. For OpenAI and other AI developers, the challenge is not just in building smarter models but in managing user expectations in an era where AI is increasingly integrated into daily life.
