OpenAI CEO Sam Altman plans to develop an AI companion device that can fundamentally change how users interact with technology beyond traditional smartphones. The device will be designed for proactive context and will be a "sci-fi dream" that requires hardware beyond current form factors. Altman is collaborating with former Apple design chief Jony Ive and his startup io Products on the project. The acquisition of io Products for $6.5 billion has brought Ive and his team into the company, and the first product will be a pocket-sized or desktop device.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has outlined ambitious plans to develop an AI companion device that could revolutionize how users interact with technology. During a recent podcast appearance, Altman described his vision for a device that is "ambiently aware" and capable of functioning as a proactive companion throughout the day [1]. This device is part of OpenAI's broader strategy to create hardware that goes beyond traditional smartphones and computers.

The AI companion device, which Altman referred to as a "sci-fi dream," would require hardware beyond current form factors to function effectively. Speaking with Zerodha co-founder Nikhil Kamath, Altman emphasized the need for AI systems to have maximum context to be useful and to alert users when assistance is needed proactively [1].

Altman's collaboration with former Apple design chief Jony Ive and his startup io Products is a significant part of this project. OpenAI acquired io Products for $6.5 billion, bringing Ive and his team of 55 engineers into the company [2]. The acquisition is OpenAI's largest to date and reflects the company's commitment to integrating design excellence with cutting-edge AI technology.

The first product from this collaboration is expected to be a pocket-sized or desktop device that offers screen-free, context-aware interactions. This device aims to be less socially disruptive than the iPhone and to provide a more intuitive and seamless user experience [2].

The acquisition of io Products has also brought in key Apple veterans, including Tang Tan, Evans Hankey, and Scott Cannon, who will take on deep design and creative responsibilities at OpenAI. Ive's LoveFrom design firm will maintain its independence while working closely with OpenAI on product development [2].

OpenAI's financial outlook is robust, with annual recurring revenue reaching $10 billion in 2025, nearly doubling from $5.5 billion in 2024, driven by the demand for ChatGPT [1]. The Pentagon's award of a $200 million AI tools contract further strengthens OpenAI's financial position for hardware development [1].

While OpenAI's AI companion device represents a significant threat to Apple's ecosystem, Apple's strength in terms of user base and ecosystem integration remains a formidable barrier. However, the integration of Jony Ive's design expertise and OpenAI's AI capabilities could lead to innovative products that challenge the status quo in the tech industry [1].
