OpenAI has announced the acquisition of product testing startup Statsig for $1.1 billion in an all-stock transaction, marking one of the most significant acquisitions for the ChatGPT creator amidst its current valuation of $300 billion. As part of the deal, Vijaye Raji, founder, and CEO of Statsig, will join OpenAI as the Chief Technology Officer of Applications. Raji will report to Fidji Simo, the newly appointed CEO of Applications, who brings her expertise from Instacart. The move is expected to strengthen OpenAI's Applications business significantly, focusing on accelerating product development through Statsig's integrated experimentation platform.
The integration of Statsig is intended to bolster the engineering efforts for OpenAI’s flagship products, including the AI coding tool Codex and ChatGPT and assist in the development of future applications. Concurrent with this acquisition, OpenAI is undergoing a transformation in its leadership structure. Kevin Weil, OpenAI's current Chief Product Officer, is transitioning to the position of Vice President of a new initiative named OpenAI for Science. Weil disclosed this change via LinkedIn, sharing that his new endeavor aims to construct a groundbreaking AI-driven platform designed to enhance scientific discovery. Srinivas Narayanan, OpenAI's existing head of engineering, has unveiled his new role as CTO of B2B Applications. Narayanan’s responsibilities will involve partnering closely with OpenAI’s Chief Operating Officer, Brad Lightcap, to enhance OpenAI's enterprise customer relations and broaden its B2B application spectrum.
The acquisition of Statsig is currently under regulatory scrutiny, but OpenAI has plans for a seamless incorporation of Statsig employees into its workforce. Statsig will maintain its operational independence, continuing to cater to its clientele from the Seattle office, ensuring minimal disruption to existing processes while benefiting from OpenAI's expansive resources.
