According to the Omdia Smartphone Display Panel Intelligence Service, the shipment of flexible AMOLED display panels will reach 631 million units in 2024, up 24% YoY. It is expected that the flexible AMOLED display panels will occupy 42% of the market share by the end of this year, surpassing the 37% of a-Si LCD and becoming the dominant technology in the smartphone display panel market. It is known that the display panel market will adopt four display panel technologies from different production lines: flexible AMOLED display panel technology, rigid AMOLED (occupying 12% of the market share), a-Si LCD and LTPS LCD (occupying 10% of the market share). The rapid growth of its market share is driven by the significant decline in the average selling price (ASP) of flexible AMOLED display panels, which is also the key to its rapid increase in shipments. The shipments of flexible AMOLED display panels increased by 31.8% YoY to 508 million units in 2023, while the average selling price declined by 14.3%. This price decline prompted smartphone vendors to shift from using LCD to using OLED display panels. Therefore, AMOLED technology (including flexible AMOLED and rigid AMOLED) will surpass LCD, occupying 53% of the market share, becoming the main smartphone display panel products in 2024.Omdia believes that the Chinese mainland OLED vendors raised the prices of low-end products in early 2024, but considering the long tail effect of last year's significant price decline, it is expected that the average selling price of flexible AMOLED display panels will still decline by 6.7% this year. The decline will slow down in 2025. According to the procurement plans of smartphone vendors and the shipment targets of OLED vendors, it is expected that the supply and demand of flexible AMOLED display panels will be balanced in 2025. However, the seasonal and structural adjustments will inevitably bring price fluctuations, the extent of which depends on the aggressiveness of the buyer or seller who wants to break the existing pattern.Joy Guo, chief analyst of Omdia's display research, said: "The price of flexible AMOLED display panels is expected to remain stable or slightly decline in the next two years, but there will be seasonal and structural price fluctuations. However, due to the limited new capacity next year, it is unlikely to see a significant decline of double-digit percentage like in 2023."Joy Guo concluded: "However, with the release of 8.6 generation OLED capacity by the end of 2026 and the gradual completion of depreciation of Chinese mainland OLED factories, it is expected that the price of OLED will decline again. This transformation will accelerate the upgrade of LCD to OLED in 2027."
