Nvidia Silenced the Growth Bears. The Financing Bear Is Still Standing.


When NvidiaNVDA-- reported after the bell on August 26, the numbers were — by any recent standard — extraordinary. Revenue for the quarter ended July 2026 was $96.2 billion, up 106% from a year earlier. That was the fastest growth in seven quarters, with data center revenue up 117% to $89.0 billion. Wall Street had expected about $92.2 billion, making this the largest revenue beat in two years. Then the guide: $108 billion for the current quarter, above the roughly $104 billion consensus. And the stock's first response was a shrug — down more than 1% in the minutes after release, up about 4% later that evening, and roughly flat to lower Thursday morning after eight down days in the previous nine sessions.
That muted reception is the story, not an aside. Nvidia has beaten estimates 14 quarters running, yet the shares fell after each of the four previous reports. The market long ago stopped asking whether Nvidia can deliver the number. It is asking whether the whole buildout behind the number is real — and on that question this quarter settled two of the three bear cases outright, and left the third exactly where it was.
The first bear case was growth. The argument ran that hyperscaler capex was peaking and Nvidia's year-over-year comparisons would finally turn punishing. The opposite happened: revenue growth accelerated, from 73% in the January quarter to 85% in the April quarter, then 106% this quarter, and data center revenue alone grew by roughly $14 billion in a single quarter, more than many AI companies' annual sales. The guidance came in above consensus, and management told Reuters it anticipates 70% sales growth in the coming year. None of this leaned on China, either: the outlook assumes no data center compute revenue from Chinese customers at all. The growth-is-peaking thesis does not survive contact with these numbers.
The second bear case was the handoff. The bears pointed at three things: a memory shortage so severe that Nvidia has notified its largest customers of server price increases above 15% for systems shipping early next year; the risk that a gross margin famously run at 75% would break; and the danger that the transition from Blackwell to the next architecture, Vera Rubin, would slip. All three failed the test. Gross margin came in at 75.0%, up 2.6 percentage points from a year ago — the memory bill shows up as a contained dip to a guided 74% next quarter, not a collapse, because Nvidia has the pricing power to pass it through. And Rubin, which analysts still expected to begin shipping "this autumn," is already in full production, with whole racks running at CoreWeave, Google Cloud, Microsoft Azure, Oracle and Nebius, and roughly a fifth of the guided quarter's data center revenue expected to come from it. The generation change is landing ahead of the modeled schedule, not behind it.
The custom-silicon worry — that Microsoft, Google, Amazon and Meta building their own accelerators would eventually clip Nvidia's share — also fails the dollar test for now. In the very quarter those in-house programs ramped hardest, Nvidia's data center dollars still roughly doubled. That is the arithmetic of a market expanding faster than anyone's share loss: a company can give up percentage points and still grow absolute revenue by triple digits. What the print does not disaggregate is which workloads Nvidia is winning — training and frontier inference are the profitable ones — so the share question is deferred, not closed. But it is deferred because the market keeps expanding, which is the better of the two ways that deferral can go.
That leaves the third bear case, and it is the one this report could not touch: who ultimately pays for all of this. Two disclosures this month frame it. Nvidia helped arrange $500 billion of financing from six major financial institutions — Apollo, BlackRock, Blackstone, Brookfield, Goldman Sachs and KKR — to fund AI infrastructure for its customers. And in a securities filing the week before earnings, Nvidia agreed to guarantee up to $105 billion of a 20-year lease OpenAI signed for a data center campus in Ohio. Michael Burry, short Nvidia since late last year, called the $500 billion effort a "Wall Street stunt" and a "sign of desperation" with "shades of Enron's effort to make wholesale power an investable class."

It is worth being precise about what these commitments are, because the "it's all a loan-back scam" reading overstates them. Nvidia is not writing $605 billion in checks. The $105 billion is a capped, conditional residual-value guarantee — it pays out only if OpenAI defaults on its lease. The $500 billion is institutional capital, not Nvidia's cash. Nvidia can plausibly backstop customers because it generates around $127 billion in annual free cash flow and holds net cash. That is exactly why the arrangement is a dual signal. The same facts read as demand so strong that the market's largest capital allocators agree to fund it, and as leverage so deep that the entire buildout now stands on the promise that AI revenue — not financing — will eventually cover the leases. Jensen Huang's defense is blunt: OpenAI pays its lease, and Nvidia merely helps secure the buildings its own chips go into. But that is a first-order answer to a question that takes years to verify. The test that matters — whether real applications and revenue, not structured financing, pay for the trillion-dollar buildout — only becomes visible in 2027 and 2028. No single quarter, however good, can close that argument. Burry's bullwhip case was never about this quarter's revenue; it is about what demand looks like after the financing runs out.
You can see the market's judgment in the price. Around $210, Nvidia is the world's most valuable company at a roughly $5 trillion market cap, and it trades at about 22 times projected earnings for the current fiscal year — a multiple that has compressed sharply even as growth accelerated. The stock has spent most of 2026 roughly flat while AMD and Intel more than doubled, the market paying for its doubts rather than rewarding delivery. That is the opportunity-cost picture in one line.
This is what separates the two kinds of bear. The bears who said Nvidia could not grow, could not hold margins, could not ship the next architecture on time were answered by evidence: the record $96.2 billion quarter, the 75% gross margin, Rubin in full production. Hold those claims against the data and they fail. The bears who say the bill comes due are making a different claim entirely — a claim about financing and time, not about products. That claim survived this quarter, and it is why the reception was muted even after the widest beat in two years.
For a retail investor, the distinction does the work. The operating half of the thesis is now as clean as it has ever been — the next few quarters are a matter of production and delivery, and the data says both are running ahead of plan. The part that is genuinely in question is structural, unanswerable by any single report, and already visible in a stock that refuses to celebrate its own record. A strong report met with a muted market is usually an opportunity rather than a verdict — but in Nvidia's case the muted reaction is the market correctly pricing the one argument the report could not disprove. The quarter silenced the bears who doubted the machine. It did not silence the bears who doubt the bill.
