In the past two years, NVIDIA has significantly expanded its investments in artificial intelligence startups, making notable contributions to the industry. Since 2024, the tech giant has completed 49 funding rounds, a substantial increase from 34 rounds in 2023, surpassing the combined total of the previous four years. As one of the world’s leading GPU manufacturers, NVIDIA is concentrating on supporting startups deemed "game changers and market creators," showcasing its commitment to shaping the future of AI.
NVIDIA's strategy includes high-profile investments exceeding a billion dollars in companies dedicated to cutting-edge AI developments. OpenAI is among the prominent recipients, with NVIDIA participating in a $66 billion funding round, contributing $1 billion. After investing in OpenAI, NVIDIA also engaged in a $60 billion funding round led by Elon Musk’s xAI. Additionally, the company took part in a $13 billion investment round for Inflection, which focuses on machine learning and applications of generative AI.
The company's bold moves extend to the autonomous vehicle sector, where it invested in Wayve, a UK-based startup, with a substantial $10.5 billion funding in May 2024. NVIDIA also supported Safe Superintelligence, founded by OpenAI's former chief scientist Ilya Sutskever, with a $10 billion investment in September 2024. Furthermore, a collaboration with technology giants such as Accel, Amazon, and Meta resulted in a $10 billion investment in Scale AI, a leader in providing high-quality training data.
NVIDIA’s influence is not limited to its billion-dollar investments. It has also taken part in substantial funding initiatives ranging from several million dollars to several billion, involving a diverse range of AI applications. This includes a $6.86 billion investment in Crusoe, a data center startup, and $6.75 billion in Figure AI, a robotics startup that received backing from numerous tech leaders. Other significant investments include Mistral AI, a French large language model developer, which received $6.4 billion, and Cohere, an enterprise language model provider, supported with $5 billion.
NVIDIA's comprehensive approach reflects its belief in the transformative power of AI across various domains. Through strategic investments, the company not only fuels innovation in AI technology but also strengthens its position at the forefront of this rapidly evolving sector, setting the stage for future advancements and unlocking new potentials.
