In a significant move that underscores the intensifying global competition for AI computing power,
has announced a monumental investment of 1000 billion dollars in OpenAI. This collaboration aims to construct next-generation data centers and AI infrastructure, addressing the surging demand for generative AI tools like ChatGPT and the substantial computational resources they require. The partnership, formalized through a memorandum of understanding, plans to build data centers with a minimum capacity of 10 gigawatts (GW) of computing power. This is equivalent to the total output of 10 traditional nuclear power plants. The initial investment of 100 billion dollars in cash will be immediately disbursed upon the formal signing of the agreement. Subsequent funding will be phased in, with NVIDIA adding more investment for each additional gigawatt of computing power, thereby gaining a stake in OpenAI and deepening the strategic alliance. The project is expected to utilize up to 5 million NVIDIA AI chips, a scale comparable to NVIDIA's projected annual shipment for the year.
This investment not only solidifies NVIDIA's dominance in the AI chip market but also positions it as OpenAI's most crucial long-term partner. Despite OpenAI's exploration of other suppliers, this agreement secures NVIDIA's leading position and aligns with strategic goals to enhance domestic tech infrastructure. Notably, NVIDIA recently announced a 50 billion dollar investment in Intel to support the U.S. government's semiconductor revitalization plan, seen as a strategic move to garner Washington's support and ease export restrictions to China.
As generative AI expands rapidly, major tech companies are embarking on an unprecedented wave of data center construction, with projected investments reaching tens of billions of dollars over the next few years. OpenAI and Oracle plan to jointly develop a 5GW data center, including the "Stargate" super facility in Abilene, Texas. Microsoft intends to invest 300 billion dollars in expanding its global data centers by the third quarter of the 2025 fiscal year and has secured a near 200 billion dollar multi-year cloud computing partnership with Nebius. Meta Platforms is constructing a large data center with 5GW of computing power, financed at least 290 billion dollars, and is in discussions with Oracle for a 200 billion dollar cloud computing collaboration. SoftBank Group announced in January a joint investment of 5000 billion dollars with OpenAI and Oracle to expand 10GW of computing power over four years.
While AI infrastructure investments are progressing at an unprecedented pace, there are concerns about market bubbles. Some analysts draw parallels to the dot-com bubble era. OpenAI's CEO acknowledged the presence of market bubbles but emphasized that AI will bring transformative value to the global economy, with the real risk lying in overvalued small startups rather than core industry players.
