NVIDIA's Huang: 20 more AI factories are planned for Europe.
NVIDIA Chief Executive Officer Jensen Huang has announced plans for 20 additional AI factories in Europe, as he kicked off his European tour with a visit to the UK. During a conversation with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer at the start of London Tech Week, Huang highlighted the UK's AI talent and the need for infrastructure support to unlock its full potential. The UK's AI ecosystem is described as "the envy of the world," with the UK's Financial Conduct Authority also setting up a regulatory sandbox to allow financial firms to experiment with AI using Nvidia's technology. In a press release, Nvidia announced that it would be working with the UK government to train more people in AI skills and expand research. Additionally, the UK government has allocated an extra £1 billion ($1.4 billion) of funding to "scale up our compute power by a factor of 20" and improve infrastructure for building out artificial intelligence in the UK [1].
Huang's visit to the UK comes as part of a broader tour of Europe, where he is expected to speak at Paris's VivaTech on Wednesday and will be visiting and meeting with leaders in the UK, Germany, France, and Belgium. The CEO emphasized the transformative nature of AI, stating that it will be considered infrastructure just as electricity was [1].
In a separate development, CSC, SURF, and Nokia have achieved a 1.2 Tbit/s data transfer, a significant milestone in preparing long-haul networks for new LUMI-AI supercomputers and AI Factories. The test, conducted over 3500 kilometers, demonstrated the feasibility of ultra-fast, cross-border connectivity for research. This high-capacity data transfer is crucial for the future of AI and high-performance computing [2].
Nvidia's stock gained further momentum on Monday as Huang set his sights on Europe, with the company's shares adding to recent gains [3]. The strategic shift in the UK's approach to technology, supported by substantial investments in human capital, technological platforms, and strategic partnerships, underscores the importance of AI in the global technology landscape.
