Nvidia’s GTC Conference Recap: Incremental Progress but No Big Surprises

Jay's InsightTuesday, Mar 18, 2025 3:29 pm ET
3min read

Nvidia’s highly anticipated GTC Conference delivered a steady stream of updates across AI, quantum computing, automotive, and data center segments. While CEO Jensen Huang provided an in-depth look at Nvidia’s latest innovations, most of the announcements had been widely expected. As a result, the stock saw some choppy action, initially climbing to 118 ahead of the keynote before pulling back to 116 as the presentation progressed.

Markets Awaited a Catalyst, But NVDA Delivered Incremental Updates

The stock market was volatile leading into Huang’s presentation. Nasdaq 100 futures hit session lows of 19,604 at 11 AM, reflecting general weakness in tech stocks, before bouncing slightly to 19,720 at the start of the keynote. nvidia itself found early support near its 10-day moving average at $114.80 before briefly rallying. However, as investors digested the details, it became clear that there were no groundbreaking surprises, and shares faded lower.

Hyperscaler Demand at an Inflection Point

One of the most notable data points was Nvidia’s update on hyperscaler demand. Huang reported that the top four cloud service providers—Amazon AWS, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud, and Oracle Cloud Infrastructure—purchased 1.3 million Hopper GPUs in 2024. He then compared this to the initial demand for Blackwell, Nvidia’s next-generation platform, emphasizing that AI is at an inflection point with computational demand 100 times higher than previously estimated.

Huang also reiterated the growing importance of inference workloads, which are now seen as the next major revenue driver for Nvidia as AI shifts from model training to real-world deployment.

Blackwell and the Road to Rubin

The Blackwell AI platform is now in full production, with partners rolling out new systems throughout 2025. Huang provided a roadmap for upcoming chips:

- Blackwell Ultra (H2 2025) – Features 2x the bandwidth and 1.5x faster memory than the original Blackwell.

- Vera Rubin (H2 2026) – Next-gen AI platform, featuring NVLink 144 for high-speed interconnects.

- Rubin Ultra (H2 2027) – Expected to deliver massive performance gains for AI factories.

- Feynman (2028) – Nvidia’s next major AI architecture, named after physicist Richard Feynman.

For data center networking, Nvidia is collaborating with TSMC on co-packaged optics, which will be critical for managing the ever-increasing scale of AI infrastructure.

Expanding Automotive and Telecom Partnerships

One of the more surprising announcements was Nvidia’s new partnership with General Motors (GM) for autonomous vehicles and AI-powered manufacturing. This is a notable development given that GM recently shut down its Cruise self-driving unit, suggesting it may now look to Nvidia’s Drive AGX system to power future autonomous efforts.

Huang also highlighted Nvidia’s collaboration with Cisco (CSCO) and T-Mobile (TMUS) to develop AI-native 6G wireless networks. This marks Nvidia’s deeper push into edge computing, where AI will be deployed closer to users for real-time decision-making.

Quantum Computing: A Bigger Focus on Thursday

Nvidia briefly discussed its Quantum-X initiative, which will play a central role in Thursday’s Quantum Computing Day. The company announced that its Quantum-X chip will arrive in H2 2026, with more details expected later this week. Nvidia’s partnerships with quantum computing firms such as IonQ (IONQ), Quantum Computing Inc. (QBTS), and Quantum Corp will likely be expanded upon in upcoming sessions.

Silicon Photonics and Ethernet Upgrades

In networking, Nvidia is making a big bet on silicon photonics to improve data center efficiency. Huang introduced:

- Spectrum-X Ethernet Chip (H2 2025) – Designed to improve AI cluster performance.

- Integrated Silicon Photonics Chips (H2 2026) – A key component in Nvidia’s effort to reduce power consumption in large-scale data centers.

These advancements are aimed at addressing bandwidth bottlenecks, which are becoming a limiting factor in AI workloads.

CUDA and AI Factories: The Future of Computing

Huang spent considerable time discussing the CUDA ecosystem, emphasizing that it remains Nvidia’s competitive moat. CUDA-X GPU-accelerated libraries are now deployed across industries, making Nvidia’s hardware deeply embedded in enterprise AI infrastructure.

He also introduced Nvidia Dynamo, an open-source framework for scaling AI reasoning models in AI factories. Dynamo is positioned as the operating system for AI inference, supporting Nvidia’s vision that every company will eventually have two factories—one for physical products and one for AI-driven decisions.

The Bottom Line: A Solid Update, But No Game-Changer

Nvidia’s GTC conference reinforced the company’s dominant position in AI but did not deliver the kind of groundbreaking announcements that would spark a major stock rally. The roadmap for Blackwell, Rubin, and Feynman is compelling, but investors were largely expecting these updates. The biggest near-term catalyst will now be execution—whether Nvidia can continue scaling AI infrastructure as hyperscaler demand accelerates.

With the Fed decision looming tomorrow, macro conditions will likely dictate short-term price action, but Nvidia remains firmly at the center of AI's long-term transformation.
