Northwood, a space startup, aims to revolutionize outdated space technology by developing scalable ground stations capable of communicating with satellites in a matter of days. CEO Bridgit Mendler discusses the company's approach on a special edition of "Bloomberg Technology."

As Northwood Space, a pioneering space technology startup, continues to make waves in the industry, its CEO, Bridgit Mendler, recently shared insights on the company's innovative approach to revolutionizing outdated ground station technology on a special edition of Bloomberg Technology. With a focus on scalable, resilient, and manufacturing-friendly ground stations, Northwood aims to create a data highway between Earth and space.

Northwood, which is based in El Segundo, California, is redefining the shared infrastructure for satellite backhaul (Number 1). The company's ground stations are designed to be horizontally scalable, enabling dynamic capacity provisioning. This means that they can handle increased traffic and demand by adding more capacity as needed, ensuring seamless communication with satellites in orbit.

Mendler, a former actress and singer on the Disney Channel, has brought her unique perspective and experience to the role of CEO (Number 3). She earned her academic credentials at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard Law School before joining the Federal Communications Commission's new Space Bureau. With a vision of a data highway between Earth and space, Mendler is focused on improving the process of sending data to and from space, addressing the difficulties of finding an access point for contacting satellites.

Northwood's ground stations are also designed to be resilient, eliminating single points of failure and anticipating irregularities and disruptions (Number 1). This ensures that communication between Earth and space remains reliable and uninterrupted.

The company's ground stations are currently being tested with key partners, including Planet Labs (Number 2). Northwood's collaborations with high-profile investors like Founders Fund, Andreessen Horowitz, and Also Capital further solidify its position as a leading player in the space technology industry.

As Northwood continues to push the boundaries of what is possible in the realm of Earth-space communication, its innovative ground station technology is poised to revolutionize the way we connect with satellites in orbit.
