Northern Endurance Partnership Launches First UK CCS Project With TotalEnergies

The Northern Endurance Partnership (NEP) has made history by launching the first carbon capture and storage (CCS) project in the UK, with TotalEnergies as a key shareholder. This groundbreaking initiative, valued at £4 billion, aims to store up to 4 million tonnes of CO2 per year initially, marking a significant step towards the UK's net-zero emissions target by 2050.

NEP's infrastructure will initially serve three carbon capture projects in the Teesside region: NZT Power, H2Teesside, and Teesside Hydrogen CO2 Capture. These projects were selected for first connection to NEP by the Department of Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) in March 2023, as part of the UK's cluster sequencing process for CCUS. NEP has been granted the first Carbon Dioxide Transport and Storage Licence in the UK under the Transportation and storage Regulatory Investment (TRI) regime, unlocking private investment in long-term infrastructure and developing a nascent CCUS market in the UK.

TotalEnergies' involvement in the NEP project aligns with its own carbon neutrality objectives. The company aims to develop significant CO2 storage capacities in the North Sea, leveraging its expertise in operations and geosciences. The project also supports TotalEnergies' focus on avoiding and reducing emissions, and developing industrial projects for carbon storage.

The NEP project is expected to create thousands of jobs during construction and operation, supporting economic growth in the Teesside and Humber regions. The project involves building an onshore CO2 gathering network, compression facilities, and a 145 km offshore pipeline, connecting to subsea injection facilities in the Endurance saline aquifer. This infrastructure will initially serve the three carbon capture projects in the Teesside region, supporting economic growth in the area. The project is aligned with the UK Government's CCUS cluster process, aiming to boost energy security, back industries, and support highly skilled jobs in Teesside and the North East.

The environmental benefits and carbon emission reductions resulting from the NEP project are substantial. By permanently storing up to 4 million tonnes of CO2 per year, it will significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions, contributing to the UK's net-zero emissions target by 2050. The project's offshore pipeline and subsea injection facilities in the Endurance saline aquifer will enable secure and efficient CO2 storage, further enhancing its environmental benefits.

In conclusion, the Northern Endurance Partnership's CCS project, with TotalEnergies as a key shareholder, is a significant milestone in the UK's journey towards net-zero emissions. The project's potential for job creation, economic growth, and substantial carbon emission reductions underscores the importance of continued investment and innovation in the CCUS sector. As the UK strives to achieve its climate goals, projects like the NEP CCS initiative will play a crucial role in securing a sustainable future.
