North Korean Hackers Steal $1M from Pepe the Frog Projects

Several cryptocurrency projects associated with Matt Furie, the creator of Pepe the Frog, were compromised by North Korean hackers, resulting in losses exceeding $1 million. The attackers targeted projects such as Replicandy, Peplicator, Hedz, and Zogz on the ChainSaw platform, as well as the Favrr project, exploiting vulnerabilities in smart contracts to mint and sell NFTs, causing their value to plummet. On-chain detective ZachXBT suggested that the attacks were likely carried out by North Korean developers hired through freelance platforms, with regular payments made to these "employees" from third-party crypto projects.

A new malware known as SparkKitty trojan is being distributed through fake app store websites, disguising itself as cryptocurrency applications and modified versions of TikTok. Once installed, the malware requests access to the photo gallery, tracking changes and uploading screenshots to a remote server. The primary target of this malware is cryptocurrency wallet seed phrases, with a focus on residents of China and Southeast Asia.

In a significant development in the cybersecurity realm, the hacker known as IntelBroker and several operators of BreachForums were apprehended in France. The U.S. Justice Department filed charges against 25-year-old British citizen Kai West, alias IntelBroker, for conspiracy to commit computer intrusions and electronic fraud. Law enforcement identified West’s accounts on the Ramp platform and Coinbase, finding scans of personal documents in the linked email. Additionally, four operators of BreachForums v2, including ShinyHunters, were arrested. In Russia, a court sentenced four members of the REvil group to five years in prison, though they were released from custody due to time served in pre-trial detention.

The recent cybersecurity incidents, including the attack on the Pepe meme creator and the distribution of the SparkKitty trojan, underscore the growing threat of cybercrime in the digital age.
