NODE Is Down 13.5% in July. The Real Risk Is Miners Still Expecting an AI Fairy Tale

July looked less like a bitcoinBTC-- problem and more like a miner re-rating
NODE's July selloff looks more like a sector reset than a bitcoin verdict. The fund lost 13.5% in July even as bitcoin rose 7.3% and ethereumETH-- rose 18.2%. The biggest drag came from the hardest-hit miner and AI-infrastructure names: WULFWULF--, APLDAPLD--, IRENIREN--, RIOTRIOT--, and Figure. That divergence matters. If this had been a straightforward crypto call, rising token prices would have offered at least some support. Instead, investors seem to have pulled back from the equity bridge connecting miners to their AI ambitions.
The risk metrics show how sharp that reset was. NODE ran at 68.9% annualized volatility with an 18.3% peak-to-trough drawdown, making July its worst month since the May 2025 launch. That reads less like a clean rotation into tokens and more like a repricing from future AI winner toward capital-intensive execution business.
VanEck estimates a $50 billion near-term funding gap for miners pursuing AI data-center demand, while hash price has already fallen to roughly $29/PH/s/day. The takeaway is not that the AI story is dead, but that investors now want proof of power access, construction progress, and revenue conversion rather than promises alone.

The bigger mistake is judging 2026 with 2025's narrative reflex
May still makes the old story look attractive
The market is still partly trapped by the last time this space rallied on narrative rather than balance-sheet proof. May is the clearest example. NODE gained 16.5% in May while Bitcoin fell 3.8% and Ethereum fell 11.0%. Mining and AI-compute names led the gains, reinforcing the idea that another leg of decoupling was around the corner: weaker crypto on-chain, stronger equity valuations in mining and infrastructure.
That setup invites a familiar bias chain. First comes anchoring to the last rerating. Then comes confirmation bias: investors see a large AI commitment and mentally treat it as already-converted revenue. In this sector, that reflex is risky because ambition can scale faster than execution. The industry now points to 783 Bitcoin produced by Bitdeer in a month and approximately $69 million of AI Cloud ARR, but those are company-level results, not proof that the broader sector has moved beyond the narrative phase.
Bears are overreacting to July, too
The opposite error is just as easy. After June, when NODE fell 8.1%, ran at 50.1% annualized volatility, and posted a 13.2% peak-to-trough drawdown, many investors moved from greed to cash preservation. July added another sharp reset, consistent with the earlier 13.5% decline and the sector's $50 billion near-term funding gap. The emotional response was simple: sell everything tied to the old AI-miner narrative before the bad news is fully priced.
But that also overreaches. Bears are treating every unproven AI pipeline as if it were already a write-down, using one bad month as the full story rather than a stress test.
What deserves to be priced now
A better frame is not "AI winner" versus "miner in trouble." It is who can turn power, capital, and timing into real assets and real revenue. VanEck has argued that investors should increasingly value miners on gross energized power rather than press-release demand. That fits NODE's setup: it is an actively managed equity ETF with bitcoin cycle-aware allocation and diversified risk management, designed to shift across infrastructure, energy, and compute beneficiaries as the market changes what it rewards.
The near-term test is straightforward:
- Bull case: new evidence that AI demand is becoming monetized through power commitments, construction progress, and revenue conversion rather than contract headlines alone.
- Bear case: more delays, more financing needs, and continued dependence on sentiment while execution slips.
Positioning for the transition: satellite exposure, not core faith
Treat NODE as a satellite allocation, not a core conviction bet. This is no longer a clean narrative trade; it is an active vehicle for a messy sector transition, with bitcoin cycle-aware allocation and diversified risk management helping navigate a market that is no longer rewarding aspiration on its own. After the recent drawdowns and volatility spikes, investors should not pay core-portfolio prices for a basket still proving who can execute.
The clearest example of what the market should be rewarding is Bitdeer. It is producing 783 Bitcoin in the month while also reporting approximately $69 million of AI Cloud ARR. That combination matters because it suggests crypto can continue supporting operations while AI revenue becomes more identifiable than theoretical.
Marathon remains worth watching, but for a different reason: its potential move toward $72,000 around the Federal Reserve's upcoming interest-rate decision highlights how macro positioning and market optics can still dominate short-term sentiment. In a sector where execution is still being tested, not every infrastructure story has yet earned the same level of confidence.
For NODE, the practical watchpoints are:
- Confirmation: holdings begin showing monetized AI revenue, energized-power progress, and a portfolio that looks more like operating assets than future stories.
- Invalidation: execution slips, financing remains strained, or the fund keeps owning companies that still depend more on belief than deliverable capacity.
