The Nigerian federal government has made obtaining a Tinted Glass Permit mandatory to enhance security, uphold public order, reduce crime, and improve road safety [1]. The Nigeria Police Force recently extended the grace period for enforcement to August 12, 2025, in response to public feedback [1]. The regulation is governed by the Motor Vehicles (Prohibition of Tinted Glass) Act of 1991, which mandates that individuals seeking to install or retain excessively dark factory tints on vehicles must secure a permit from the Inspector-General of Police [1].
Tinted glass is defined as glass that has been darkened through the addition of colouring agents during production, used primarily to reduce heat in buildings or for aesthetic purposes. On vehicles, however, its use is tightly controlled [1]. A permit is required in several scenarios, including the installation of aftermarket tint films such as ceramic or dyed films, possession of factory-fitted tints darker than legal limits, medical conditions requiring protection from sunlight, and security reasons for high-profile individuals [1].
The online application process integrates the National Identification Number (NIN) and Tax Identification Number (TIN) for identity verification, along with biometric capture and background checks [1]. Applicants must prepare documents such as the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), proof of ownership, vehicle license, and clear images of the front and rear of the vehicle [1]. The Nigerian Police Force confirms that the online application is free, though additional costs may apply for medical reports or hiring an agent [1].
The application involves several steps: selecting between individual or corporate/NGO status, providing biodata, and choosing either physical or virtual verification [1]. Physical verification requires a visit to a police command, where documents are checked and biometrics are captured. Virtual verification is completed remotely via the portal, requiring clear images of the vehicle and supporting documents [1]. All uploaded files must not exceed 2 MB [1].
Upon submission, applicants are directed to the Virtual Verification Service (VVS) portal for document vetting. Once approved, a downloadable permit with a QR code is issued for police verification during checks [1]. The entire process, including background checks and verification, should be completed within five working days [1].
Despite being self-directed, applicants may face challenges such as delays in email verification or website issues. In such cases, applicants are encouraged to seek assistance at the State Intelligence Bureau (SIB) or the Federal House of Representatives (FHQ) in Abuja [1].
