Netflix has celebrated Mexican Cinema Day by unveiling a slate of new national films, including adaptations of Carlos Fuentes' novel "Aura" and "Contra el huracán." The streaming giant is committed to supporting Mexican content, investing in local talent and storytelling.

The new films showcase Mexican literature and stories, exploring diversity, creativity, and authenticity. "Aura," directed by Alonso Ruizpalacios, is an adaptation of Carlos Fuentes' 1962 novel, telling the story of Felipe Montero, a young historian who becomes entangled in a mysterious atmosphere reminiscent of an eerie garden. "Contra el huracán," directed by Jorge Michel Grau, is a story of fraternity, inequality, and extreme courage, where two half-brothers struggle to survive when an unexpected storm turns into Hurricane Otis off the coast of Acapulco.

Other titles in the slate include "La hora de los valientes," directed by Ariel Winograd, which explores friendship, redemption, and the courage to face the unthinkable. "México 86," directed by Gabriel Ripstein, chronicles Mexico's improbable bid to host the 1986 World Cup, with Diego Luna starring as an executive producer and actor. The slate also includes "Un hijo propio," a feature documentary directed by two-time Academy Awards nominee Maite Alberdi, which follows a woman's desperate attempt to become a mother by faking a pregnancy.

Carolina Leconte, Netflix's VP of Content for Mexico, emphasized the company's commitment to local content. "Our priority is always finding an audience at home," she said. "We love seeing Mexican stories being so well received globally, but our heart is always with what moves us as a country."

The new films are part of Netflix's broader investment in Mexican content, including the release of Rodrigo Prieto's magical realist film "Pedro Páramo" and the upcoming docuseries "The Dead Girls." The streaming service has also announced new series, such as "Santita" and "Love 9 to 5 (Amor de Oficina)," and has wrapped production on "Lovesick," an adaptation of Ángeles Mastretta's novel directed by her daughter, Catalina Aguilar Mastretta.
