Daniel Liss, co-founder of social media platforms Dispo and Teaser AI, has launched Nemo Industries, a venture leveraging artificial intelligence to revolutionize pig iron production. This pivot from digital innovation to heavy industry stems from Liss’s participation in a 2023 war game simulation at the National War College, which highlighted vulnerabilities in U.S. supply chains critical to national defense, including steel production. The exercise underscored a gap in domestic capacity to manufacture military infrastructure, prompting Liss to focus on modernizing the foundational steel industry. Nemo Industries aims to address this by integrating AI into pig iron production, a key intermediate step in steelmaking [1].
Liss’s approach combines AI optimization with direct investment in physical infrastructure. Unlike traditional steel plants that rely on outdated tools like Excel spreadsheets, Nemo plans to construct its own furnaces powered by natural gas—a cleaner alternative to coal—and explore carbon capture technologies. The company’s strategy is rooted in the belief that AI integration from the outset could yield a 20-30% margin advantage over competitors in a capital-intensive sector. This ambition aligns with broader U.S. policy goals, such as the Inflation Reduction Act’s tax incentives for decarbonization, which Nemo aims to leverage for profitability [2].
Funding and strategic partnerships are central to scaling Nemo’s vision. The company has secured $28.2 million in prior funding and is seeking a $100 million Series A round. Michael DuBose, an investor with expertise in LNG infrastructure, has joined as a partner, bringing industry-specific knowledge critical for large-scale operations. Additionally, Nemo has reportedly received over $1 billion in conditional incentives from two southern states, contingent on building three plants over 15 years. Such support reflects the venture’s potential to align with regional economic development priorities and national supply chain resilience goals [3].
Nemo’s project transcends efficiency gains, addressing strategic vulnerabilities in
supply chains. By modernizing pig iron production, the company seeks to strengthen the U.S. industrial base, a sector historically dominated by figures like Carnegie and Rockefeller. Liss’s vision positions AI not merely as a tool for optimization but as a catalyst for reimagining how foundational industries operate in a 21st-century context. This approach underscores the growing intersection of technology and traditional sectors, where innovation in physical infrastructure is as critical as digital disruption [4].The venture’s success hinges on its ability to balance technological ambition with the practicalities of heavy industry. While the steel sector has long resisted change, Nemo’s focus on scalable AI systems and carbon-efficient production methods offers a model for future industrialization. If realized, the project could redefine how supply chains adapt to geopolitical and environmental challenges, demonstrating that transformative innovation is not confined to Silicon Valley but can emerge from the very industries that underpin economic and national security [5].
