Negotiations are reaching their final stages! An overwhelming 85% of Costco's (COST.US) truck drivers have voted in favor of a strike.
Costco's truck drivers union members have voted to strike, with 85% of members voting in favor of the strike, according to the results of the vote. The decision comes ahead of the company's deadline to negotiate a new labor contract at the end of the month. The union said in a statement that the vote "directly reflects the company's failure to engage in constructive negotiations and its refusal to offer a fair contract proposal that reflects the company's record profits." The current labor contract covers over 18,000 Costco employees and is set to expire on January 31. The final round of negotiations will begin on January 20. Truck drivers union president Sean O'Brien stated, "From the beginning, we made it clear to Costco that our members would not work one day past January 31 if we did not reach a historic, industry-leading agreement." Moreover, he warned, "Costco's greedy executives have less than two weeks to do the right thing." It's worth noting that the Costco union employees held a nationwide mock strike last week to prepare for a possible strike, including events in Long Island and San Diego.
