Navitas Semiconductor (NVTS) experienced a significant post-market surge, with shares rising by over 117%. This remarkable performance comes on the heels of the company's announcement of a strategic collaboration with NVIDIA (NVDA) to develop next-generation 800V high-voltage DC (HVDC) architecture for AI data centers. The partnership aims to enhance power efficiency, reliability, and scalability for NVIDIA's GPU systems.
Navitas' high-power GaN and SiC technologies will be integral to NVIDIA's new 800V HVDC architecture, which seeks to address the limitations of traditional 54V in-rack power distribution systems. The current architecture is constrained by power density, copper requirements, and reduced system efficiency, particularly as power demands exceed 200kW. By adopting 800V HVDC, NVIDIA can directly convert 13.8kV AC grid power to 800V DC at the data center perimeter, using solid-state transformers (SST) and industrial-grade rectifiers. This approach eliminates multiple AC/DC and DC/DC conversion steps, maximizing efficiency and reliability.
The higher voltage level of 800V HVDC allows for a significant reduction in copper wire thickness, up to 45%, due to I2R losses. This results in a more sustainable power delivery system for next-generation AI data centers with GW power demand. Navitas' GaNSafe™ power ICs and GeneSiC™ silicon carbide (SiC) devices will enable unprecedented reliability and robustness, with features such as short-circuit protection, ESD protection, and programmable slew rate control.
Navitas' collaboration with NVIDIA underscores the company's leadership in AI data center solutions and its commitment to driving innovation in power delivery technologies. The partnership is expected to improve end-to-end power efficiency by up to 5%, reduce maintenance costs by 70%, and lower cooling costs by directly connecting HVDC to IT and compute racks.
