National Crime Agency Officer Charged With 2017 Bitcoin Theft

In a significant development, prosecutors in the United Kingdom have accused an officer from the National Crime Agency (NCA) of stealing 50 Bitcoin (BTC) in 2017. The Crown Prosecution Services has authorized Merseyside Police to charge the officer, Paul Chowles, with multiple counts related to the concealment, disguise, and conversion of criminal property, as well as theft.

Chowles, who is 42 years old, is scheduled to appear at Liverpool Magistrates’ Court on April 25th. The 50 BTC in question was valued at £60,000 ($77,658) at the time of the alleged theft in 2017, and its current value is approximately £3.26 million ($4.2 million).

This case comes less than a year after the UK implemented new legislation that granted additional crypto-related powers to the NCA and police. These expanded powers allow authorities to seize crypto assets from criminals who remain anonymous or are based overseas. Additionally, police are now empowered to seize physical items related to crypto investigations, such as flash drives and written passwords.

Furthermore, the new legislation permits UK police to destroy a crypto asset if returning it to circulation is not conducive to the public good. Victims of crypto crime are also empowered to apply for the return of digital assets stolen from them. Chief Crown Prosecutor Adrian Foster had argued last year that these expanded powers were necessary to combat the increasing use of crypto technology by criminal gangs.

“Crypto assets are often used by criminal gangs to launder their criminal profits internationally at the touch of a button,” Foster stated. “It is vital that investigators and prosecutors have the capability and agility to keep pace with this changing nature of crime. These new measures will greatly assist our ability to restrain, freeze, or eliminate crypto assets from illegal enterprise.”
