Nasdaq 100 Just Gained $3.5 Trillion in 4 Days. Is This the Next Leg Up or a Trap?

The Nasdaq 100's $3.5 Trillion Repricing
The Nasdaq 100 has added about $3.5T in market value over four trading sessions, a 9.3% move that sharply reversed the prior correction. That kind of speed changes positioning and sentiment quickly. For investors who were sidelined, waiting longer likely means paying a higher price.
Earnings, not abstract hope, drove the reversal
Strong tech results restored confidence that massive artificial intelligence outlays are still ongoing and, for some major companies, already supporting revenue. That did not settle the valuation debate, but it did strengthen the case that the AI story is being supported by reported results rather than narrative alone.
The rally was broad across the AI stack
This was not just a chip trade. The rebound spread to software and to the big cloud platforms. MicrosoftMSFT-- rose 26%, PalantirPLTR-- 32%, and Alphabet and NvidiaNVDA-- also posted strong gains. Earlier this month, the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index also advanced over 7% in a single session. That breadth suggests a wider rerating across AI-related segments, not a move confined to one subgroup.
AI capex remains the engine, but the debate has shifted
Recent earnings reinforced the idea that massive artificial intelligence outlays are not only here to stay. They also kept attention on the infrastructure chain. Bulls are betting that hyperscalers are still spending at historic levels across graphics processors, networking gear, power infrastructure, cooling, memory, servers, real estate, fiber, and energy agreements. As long as that spending holds, the revenue pipeline remains visible.
Why the bull case still looks cleaner
This is still primarily an infrastructure cycle. The buyers are balance-sheet strong, and much of the required setup still has to be built. That tends to support demand for semis, equipment, interconnect, power hardware, and data-center services before broader customer monetization fully shows up. Analysts were already debating whether hyperscaler AI budgets could stay above $1T by 2027, with two banks see $1T+ in 2027 while consensus looks more cautious. If that gap holds, the spending story keeps momentum.
The main bear case is capex fatigue, not a missing AI trend
The sharper objection is no longer whether AI matters. It is whether the largest tech companies are spending too much, too quickly, before the revenue model is fully proven. That is a timing issue. If infrastructure investment keeps outrunning usable demand and monetization, investors may start discounting the expected returns more heavily.

Positioning adds some caution. Goldman said hedge-fund clients are taking profits on semiconductor and equipment makers, even though AI remains a core theme in the rally. That does not signal a full breakdown in the trade, but it does suggest investors are becoming more selective and more willing to hedge.
What would weaken the next leg higher
The clearest risk is guidance that shows slower capex follow-through, weaker revenue conversion, or a growing gap between infrastructure investment and demand. If the more aggressive 2027 spending outlook proves overstated, multiples could compress quickly. If the spending story and earnings story remain consistent, though, the rally can still extend.
How to approach the move selectively
After a fast reset, the practical approach is to follow earnings and cash-flow visibility rather than the loudest AI headlines.
Favor companies already turning AI demand into sales
This rally was driven by strong earnings and remains tied to ongoing AI infrastructure spending. That favors companies already showing cloud demand, shipment visibility, and customer monetization in their results.
The AI trade is still favored, but less one-dimensional
Prediction markets show 84% YES odds for NVIDIA becoming the largest company by market cap by the end of August, a sign of where attention remains concentrated. At the same time, Goldman says hedge-fund clients are taking profits on semiconductor and equipment makers, while another read describes the broader washout as a healthy reset rather than a loss of conviction in AI. That mix is more supportive of continued gains than of a full reversal, but it argues against a mindless chase.
Stay selective inside the capex chain
The buildout is real, but it has entered a capital-allocation debate. That calls for more discipline in names that are still waiting for proof that spending will translate into durable revenue.
Use these watchpoints over the next few sessions: - Earnings quality: revenue conversion needs to keep matching the strong results that helped spark the rally. - Spending conviction: watch whether hyperscaler budgets still support the AI buildout even as investors demand clearer returns. - Macro interference: if rising interest rates and sticky inflation start to overpower the AI story, position sizing should become more conservative.
