NASA Astronauts Unaware of Musk's Early Return Offer Amid Starliner Delays

NASA astronauts Suni Williams and Butch Wilmore, who have been stranded on the International Space Station (ISS) for nine months, have stated that they were unaware of any offer by Elon Musk to bring them back to Earth early. The astronauts, who were supposed to return after an eight-day mission, have been unable to do so due to issues with the Boeing Starliner spacecraft. Despite the delay, the astronauts have expressed that they are in good spirits and have been conducting their duties as planned.

Elon Musk, the CEO of SpaceX, has claimed that his company could have brought the astronauts home months ago, but the Biden administration refused the offer. However, both Williams and Wilmore have denied any knowledge of such an offer, stating that they were prepared for the possibility of an extended stay in space.

NASA's former deputy administrator, Pam Melroy, and former administrator, Bill Nelson, have also stated that they were unaware of any offer from Musk to bring the astronauts home early. Melroy mentioned that no such offer reached NASA headquarters, and Nelson confirmed that there was no discussion about the matter at the senior leadership level. This has led to speculation that Musk's offer may not have been communicated to the relevant authorities at NASA.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding Musk's offer, the astronauts have remained focused on their mission. They have participated in spacewalks and conducted scientific research, contributing to the ongoing operations of the ISS. Williams has described the space station as being in its prime, with all facilities operating and significant scientific work being carried out. She emphasized the importance of continuing to utilize the ISS for its full potential until the planned end of its mission in 2030.

The astronauts are scheduled to return to Earth on March 19 aboard a SpaceX capsule, marking the end of their extended stay in space.
