NANO Nuclear Energy Inc. (NASDAQ: NNE) has been selected by AFWERX for a $1.25 million Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) contract to deploy its KRONOS MMR™ Energy System at a Washington, D.C. military base. The project, which aims to address critical challenges within the Department of the Air Force (DAF), involves research, development, testing, and evaluation. This Direct to Phase II (D2P2) contract is part of AFWERX's initiative to streamline the SBIR and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) process, accelerating timelines and expanding opportunities for small businesses .

The KRONOS MMR™ is a stationary, high-temperature gas-cooled microreactor designed to deliver 15 MWe (45 MWth) of carbon-free power. It is designed to operate autonomously, with features such as meltdown-resistant TRISO fuel, passive helium cooling, and the ability to disconnect from the main grid and operate independently during outages. The system is also being designed to withstand cyber and physical threats, ensuring continuous mission-critical operations .

NANO Nuclear, an advanced technology-driven nuclear energy company, focuses on cutting-edge portable and other microreactor technologies, nuclear fuel fabrication, nuclear fuel transportation, nuclear applications for space, and nuclear industry consulting services. The company's reactor products in development include the KRONOS MMR™ Energy System, ZEUS, a portable solid core battery reactor, and LOKI MMR™, a space-focused portable reactor .

The KRONOS MMR™ represents a transformative potential for energy assurance within the DAF, combining resilience, safety, and carbon-free generation in a modular microreactor platform. Multiple KRONOS MMR™ units can be deployed in combination to achieve targeted power levels, providing greater flexibility across a range of mission requirements .

AFWERX, the innovation arm of the DAF, has awarded over 10,400 contracts worth more than $7.24 billion since 2019, strengthening the U.S. defense industrial base and driving faster technology transition to operational capability. The DAF's Open Topic SBIR/STTR program, initiated in 2018, has expanded the range of innovations funded by the DAF .
