Musk's xAI Unveils Grok API
In August of this year, xAI, owned by Elon Musk, promised to provide the Grok model through an Application Programming Interface (API). Now, Musk has fulfilled that promise, and the API interface is now available.
Grok is the company's flagship generative artificial intelligence model, which supports many features on Musk's social media platform, X.
According to the official documentation, xAI's API currently has only one model - Grok-beta, priced at $5 per million input tokens (approximately 750,000 words) and $15 per million output tokens. It is also unclear which version of Grok Grok-beta is.
In addition, the API interface also supports function calls, allowing the Grok model to connect to external tools such as databases and search engines.
Musk established xAI last year and launched the language model Grok in November, which was the company's first product with a monthly user fee of $16.
In April of this year, the company launched the Grok 1.5V visual processing model; in August, xAI released an early preview version of the language model Grok-2, which has functions such as chatting, coding, and reasoning, including two versions: Grok-2 and Grok-2 mini, the latter being a lighter and more affordable version of Grok.
One distinctive feature of the Grok series models is that they have what Musk calls a rebellious tendency, being willing to answer tough questions that most other AI systems refuse. For example, if told to answer vulgarly, Grok would gladly accept and spit out profanities and colorful language arts that people won't hear on ChatGPT.
Currently, xAI is working hard to catch up with strong competitors like OpenAI and Anthropic to stand out in the generative AI competition. In May of this year, xAI raised $6 billion in a round of financing led by investors such as Andreessen Horowitz, Sequoia Capital, and Fidelity.
Moreover, Grok has become an indispensable part of Musk's X platform. Grok can generate images on the X platform, summarize news and popular events, and in the future, may enhance X's search functions, account profiles, post analysis, and reply functions.
Musk often claims that the data from the X platform gives xAI an absolute advantage over competitors. This month, under pressure from regulatory agencies, X changed its privacy policy to allow third-party AI companies to train models based on X's posts.
