Mumbai, India - The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Mumbai due to heavy rainfall and waterlogging in several areas. Overnight showers have caused severe waterlogging in parts of the city, including Milan Subway, Kurla, Chembur, Gandhi Market, and Andheri. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has advised residents to avoid stepping out unless necessary.
The IMD has forecasted heavy to very heavy rainfall in Mumbai and Thane from August 16 to 17, with Raigad under a red alert for extremely heavy rain. As of now, IMD’s Colaba and Santacruz observatories have recorded 1,119.2 mm and 1,435.7 mm of rainfall respectively since the monsoon began [1].
The heavy rainfall has led to significant disruptions in daily life. Fishermen have been advised to stay ashore due to squally weather with wind speeds of 40–50 kmph, gusting up to 60 kmph, along and off the North Konkan coast [1].
The IMD attributes the heavy rain forecast to a low-pressure area formed in the Bay of Bengal off north Andhra Pradesh and a trough that runs up to the Arabian Sea. "The rainfall activity in Maharashtra is likely to stay intense over the next week," said Shubhangi Bhute, IMD Mumbai’s director [2].
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has advised residents to avoid stepping out unless necessary due to the severe waterlogging and potential flooding. The BMC has also advised people to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel.
