Motel 6 Faces Lawsuit From Former Spokesperson Tom Bodett

Tom Bodett, the long-time spokesperson for Motel 6, has filed a lawsuit against the hotel chain, alleging that it has continued to use his voice and name without permission. Bodett, known for his signature line “We’ll leave the light on for you,” has been associated with Motel 6 for 39 years. However, the partnership ended in January when the new owners of Motel 6 failed to make an annual payment of $1.2 million.

According to the lawsuit filed in a Manhattan federal court, Motel 6’s new owners provided various excuses for the delayed payment, including blaming the ownership transition and claiming that Bodett had not fulfilled his obligations under their agreement. Bodett is seeking $1.2 million in damages, along with additional compensation. He claims that Motel 6 has continued to use his voice on its reservation line and that he coined the famous tagline. The ad campaign, which has been inducted into the Clio Advertising Hall of Fame, has been a significant part of Motel 6’s marketing strategy since 1986.
