Mota-Engil CEO sees growth in Nigeria, Angola, Mozambique
Portugal's largest construction company, Mota-Engil, has reported a significant increase in net profit for the first half of 2025, driven primarily by strong sales in Africa. The company's net profit rose by 20% to an all-time high of 59 million euros ($69.07 million), up from 49 million euros in the same period last year [1].
The company's overall sales increased by 0.5% to 2.75 billion euros, with Africa emerging as the region with the strongest growth and profitability. Sales in Africa surged by 59% to 1.05 billion euros, largely due to projects in Nigeria and Angola [1]. In contrast, sales in Latin America fell by 27% to 1.09 billion euros, reflecting a "transition period" following two consecutive years of significant growth. Sales in Europe dropped by 18% to 242 million euros after the company sold its Polish operations in September [1].
Mota-Engil's earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) rose by 13% to 448 million euros, and the EBITDA margin increased to 16% from 15% the previous year [1]. The company's order backlog reached 14.7 billion euros in June, up by 1 billion euros from the previous year, providing a strong revenue outlook for 2026 and beyond [1].
Mota-Engil CEO, António Mota, highlighted the potential for growth in Nigeria, Angola, and Mozambique, citing the strong performance of projects in these regions as a key driver of the company's recent success. He noted that the company's strategic focus on these markets is expected to continue, supported by the growing infrastructure needs and investment opportunities in these countries.
The company's strategic partnerships, including a 40% ownership by the Mota family and a 32.41% stake by China Communications Construction Company, have also contributed to its robust financial performance. The CEO expressed confidence in the company's ability to capitalize on the growing demand for construction services in Africa and other regions.
