Moonbirds, an Ethereum-based non-fungible token (NFT) collection, experienced a notable surge in market activity following the sale of its intellectual property (IP) to
Cap Games. This acquisition, announced on May 30, marked a significant shift for the Moonbirds ecosystem, as Orange Cap Games took over creative and developmental control of the project. Yuga Labs, which had acquired Moonbirds via the purchase of Proof Labs in 2024, expressed confidence in Orange Cap Games, with CEO Greg Solano stating that Moonbirds "deserve a team whose whole world is the birds."The sale of the IP rights to Moonbirds from Yuga Labs to Orange Cap Games has driven the NFT collection’s biggest sales spike in months. On June 6, Moonbirds reached a weekly sales volume of over $2 million, representing a 2,525% increase from the previous week. This surge in sales also saw the collection surpass its sales performance for all of May by June 6. In June, the collection has sales of around $1.4 million so far, up 43% from May’s $900,000. Moonbirds also reached over 1,000 transactions in the last seven days, an 877% increase on the previous week. Thanks to this surge, Moonbirds is now the seventh-ranked NFT collection in weekly sales, surpassing popular collections like Pudgy Penguins and Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC).
The acquisition by Orange Cap Games is expected to bring new creative and developmental directions to the Moonbirds ecosystem. Orange Cap Games is known for developing Vibes, a hybrid trading card game that integrates physical and digital gameplay elements. The game features Pudgy Penguins IP, allowing players to collect and trade using cards in both the physical and digital worlds. This expertise in blending physical and digital elements could bring innovative changes to the Moonbirds project, potentially attracting more investors and enthusiasts.
The resurgence of Moonbirds comes at a time when digital collectibles are showing signs of recovery. In May, NFT sales reached $476 million, marking a 27% increase compared to April. This was the first monthly sales increase in 2025, after a five-month decline since December 2024. The month also saw a significant uptick in unique NFT buyers, reaching 936,000, a 50% increase compared to April’s 622,000. This broader trend of recovery in the NFT market likely contributed to the surge in Moonbirds sales, as investors and collectors showed renewed interest in digital assets.
The sale of Moonbirds IP to Orange Cap Games is part of a broader strategy by Yuga Labs to focus on its core projects. Earlier in May, Yuga Labs also sold the IP for the Mythics and Oddities NFT collections to Orange Cap Games. This move allows Yuga Labs to concentrate on its flagship projects, such as the Bored Ape Yacht Club, while Orange Cap Games can leverage its expertise to drive the growth of Moonbirds and other acquired collections. The deal, which includes no disclosed pricing or terms, signifies a strategic realignment for both companies, with Yuga Labs streamlining its portfolio and Orange Cap Games expanding its creative and developmental capabilities.
