Mitsui & Co. and Mitsui O.S.K. Lines have agreed to acquire the Port of Nigg in northeast Scotland, marking a significant strategic move for both companies. The acquisition, subject to regulatory approval, includes the Port of Nigg Limited, Global Energy Fabrication Limited, and Global Energy Facilities Ltd. The deal is expected to bolster Mitsui's position in the energy sector and strengthen its supply chain in Europe.Mitsui & Co., a global trading and investment company, and Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, a leading shipping company, will jointly own the acquired businesses. Mitsui & Co. Europe Ltd. and Mitsui O.S.K. Lines Ltd. reached the agreement to acquire the assets. The acquisition is part of Mitsui's broader strategy to support the UK's energy transition and achieve its sustainability goals [1].
The Port of Nigg is located on the North Sea coast of Scotland, one of the world's largest offshore wind power development areas. The port is crucial for offshore wind power generation and will play a significant role in the UK's energy transition efforts. The acquisition will enable Mitsui to leverage its extensive industrial networks and MOL's shipping and port business assets to enhance steel processing and manufacturing operations, base port operations, and supply chains centered on these activities [2].
The acquisition is expected to be completed in the summer of 2025. Post-acquisition, Mitsui will hold a 51% stake in the three companies, with the remaining 49% held by Mitsui O.S.K. Lines. The deal also involves significant new investment in expanding quayside infrastructure and manufacturing capacity at Nigg to meet growing demand from the offshore wind and oil and gas sectors [3].
The move represents Mitsui's first major investment in a Scottish port facility and reinforces its ambition to be a key player in Europe's low-carbon energy transition. The acquisition builds on a longstanding relationship between Mitsui and GEG founder Roy MacGregor, whose holding company first welcomed Mitsui as a 25.5% shareholder in 2012 [4].
