Middlefield Cheese Listeria Recall Triggers Multi-State FDA Action Amid Safety Concerns

The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) has initiated recalls for several cheese products across multiple states due to potential Listeria monocytogenes contamination. Among the affected entities, Middlefield Original Cheese Co-Op in Middlefield, Ohio, issued a recall involving approximately 246.5 pounds of cheese. The products, manufactured June 16, June 24, and July 16, were distributed throughout Ohio from July 14 to August 7. These items include 100% Grass-Fed Pepper Jack Cheese sold in various package sizes and brand names, such as Middlefield and Copia, alongside Horseradish Flavored Cheese, Monterey Jack Cheese, and Farmers Cheese. While no illnesses have been reported, consumers are advised against consumption, with refunds available at purchase locations.

Additionally, Wegmans Food Markets, Inc. retracted a selection of its Medium Camembert Soft Ripened Cheese, among others, after an alert by Estancia Holdings following notice from a French supplier about potential Listeria contamination in three shipments. Impacted products were retailed in multiple states, including Connecticut, Maryland, and New York, spanning from July 1 to August 12. Consumers are cautioned to dispose of the items or return them for reimbursement.

Fromi USA, also under FDA scrutiny, has recalled Brie Royal Faucon cheese over similar contamination concerns. Distributed to specialty shops in Brooklyn, New York, the Brie was available from July 24 to August 13. The recall affects 12 cases identified by lot number 615. Consumers who purchased the product, especially if unwrapped, are encouraged to seek refunds at their respective outlets. As with other recalls, no associated illnesses have surfaced to date.

Listeria monocytogenes, a bacterium present in these cheese products, poses health risks, notably to vulnerable populations. Symptoms in general may range from high fevers, headaches, and gastrointestinal distress to more severe neurological impacts in at-risk groups. Pregnant women face additional risks, including potential miscarriages and stillbirths. Vigilance for symptoms is advised if contaminated cheese was consumed, with prompt medical consultation recommended.

The FDA continues to oversee the recall process, emphasizing the need for regulatory compliance and consumer safety assurances. While analyst predictions on the economic impact remain speculative, these product withdrawals highlight the ongoing importance of stringent food safety measures across supply chains.
