Midas Launches Tokenized US Treasury Bill on Algorand Blockchain Offering 4.06% Yield

Midas, a German tokenization protocol, has introduced a tokenized US Treasury bill on the Algorand blockchain, offering European investors access to yield-bearing government bonds without any investment minimum. The mTBILL, as it is called, is a tokenized certificate that references short-term US Treasury exchange-traded funds (ETFs). This innovative financial product was announced on May 29, marking a significant development in the tokenization of real-world assets.
The first atomic swap involving the mTBILL took place on May 27, where $2 million in USDC was exchanged for mTBILLS on the Algorand blockchain. This transaction was executed by a third party, demonstrating the efficiency and security of the Algorand network. Midas highlights that the mTBILL offers a lower barrier to entry for retail investors compared to existing tokenized money market funds, such as BlackRock’s USD Institutional Digital Liquidity Fund (BUIDL), which requires a minimum investment of $5 million. The mTBILL, with no investment minimums, is designed to be more accessible to a broader range of investors, offering a net yield of 4.06% as of May 29.
Algorand, the decentralized network on which the mTBILL is built, is known for its scalable applications and rapid transactions. The Algorand Foundation commented on the mTBILL launch, stating that these assets will soon integrate into their decentralized finance (DeFi) ecosystem, further enhancing the utility and accessibility of tokenized Treasury bills.
The launch of the mTBILL is part of a broader trend of tokenized money market funds gaining popularity due to increasing institutional adoption of digital assets. This trend is driven by the benefits of tokenization, such as enhanced liquidity, transparency, and accessibility. The mTBILL's launch on Algorand represents the first non-EVM (Ethereum Virtual Machine) deployment of tokenized US Treasuries, showcasing the versatility and innovation of the Algorand blockchain.
The mTBILL's introduction aligns with the growing interest in tokenized Treasury funds, which have become one of the hottest corners of the real-world asset (RWA) market. Excluding stablecoins, tokenized Treasury funds account for a significant portion of tokenized RWAs, reflecting their appeal to investors seeking stable, yield-bearing assets. The mTBILL's launch on Algorand is expected to attract more investors to the DeFi ecosystem, further solidifying Algorand's position as a leading blockchain for financial applications.
