Microsoft has unveiled two new data center infrastructure chips designed to speed up artificial intelligence (AI) applications and enhance data center efficiency. The Azure Integrated HSM (Hardware Security Module) and Azure Boost DPU (Data Processing Unit) are set to improve security and performance in Microsoft's cloud services.

The Azure Integrated HSM is a custom security chip designed to keep crucial encryption and other security data within the security module, fortifying data protection. The Azure Boost DPU, Microsoft's first in-house data processing unit, offloads networking and storage management tasks from CPUs, reducing their workload and improving overall system performance.

These chips are designed to work seamlessly with Microsoft's existing Azure Maia AI Accelerator and Cobalt 100 CPU, optimizing the entire infrastructure stack for AI workloads. The Azure Maia 100 AI Accelerator, with its 105 billion transistors and 5-nanometer TSMC process, supports faster model training and inference times. The Azure Cobalt CPU, an Arm-based processor, offers up to 40% better performance than current Arm-based servers in Microsoft's data centers.
