Edge is an experimental feature, integrating Microsoft's AI assistant with webpage search functions via a text box in new browser tabs.Copilot is designed to read information across browser tabs, respond to voice commands, and extract data from webpages, bypassing advertisements. This development is part of a broader shift, as AI tools progressively replace traditional web functionalities. Chatbots have increasingly become substitutes for web search, with many tech experts predicting that such AI-driven products may replace browsers as the default means for navigating the internet for some users.
Competitors like Google (GOOGL.US) are also engaging in similar endeavors, embedding their Gemini assistant into the Chrome browser. Earlier this year, Google introduced an "AI mode" in its web searches, indicating a growing trend among tech firms to enhance browsers with AI capabilities.
Sean Lyndersay, Vice President of Microsoft Edge product development, remarked in a blog post, "We are witnessing a turning point in how people interact with the web." Previously, Edge users could activate a limited version of Copilot by clicking the swirling turquoise icon at the top of the browser. The new Copilot mode, however, requires users to opt-in and can be disabled via the Edge browser's settings.
