MSFT--
Azure, Microsoft's cloud computing platform, has been gradually implementing MFA enforcement in phases to ensure customers have ample time to prepare. Phase 1, which began in October 2024, required MFA for Azure portal and admin center sign-ins. Phase 2, set to begin in October 2025, will enforce MFA for resource management operations through various clients, including Azure CLI, PowerShell, and REST APIs [2].
The new requirement aims to block unauthorized access to high-value cloud resources by adding an extra layer of verification beyond passwords. According to Microsoft's research, enabling MFA can prevent over 99.2 percent of account compromise attacks, making it one of the most effective defenses against credential theft [1].
Microsoft has advised customers to enable MFA for their users by October 1, 2025, and to update their Azure CLI and PowerShell clients to ensure compatibility. Users who cannot enable MFA by the deadline can postpone the enforcement date through the Azure Portal [2].
The enforcement of MFA aligns with Microsoft's zero-trust security strategy, aiming to safeguard customer workloads and uphold the integrity of cloud environments worldwide. As cyberthreats continue to evolve, this move is a significant step in enhancing the security of Azure services.
