MG Motor has introduced two new electric vehicles (EVs), the IM5 saloon and IM6 SUV, at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. These vehicles, part of MG's new 'Intelligence in Motion' sub-brand, are designed to challenge established premium rivals with their cutting-edge technology and high-performance motors. The IM5 Long Range variant boasts a WLTP-estimated range of up to 441 miles on a single charge, positioning it competitively against Tesla's Model 3 and other high-range EVs.

The IM5 and IM6 feature an 800-volt architecture, allowing for rapid charging at 396 kilowatts to fill the battery to 80 percent from 10 percent in 17 minutes. This technology is comparable to that of the Hyundai Ioniq and the Xpeng G6. The IM5, with rear-wheel steering, has a turning circle of just under 10 meters, while the IM6, with twin electric motors, offers 767 hp in the Performance version, providing a 0-62 mph acceleration time of 3.2 seconds.

The IM5 is available with 75 kWh and 100 kWh battery options, starting at £39,450 and £48,495 respectively, while the IM6 is only available with a 100 kWh battery, starting at £47,995. The Performance versions of both vehicles are priced at £50,995. The IM5 and IM6 will initially be available in the U.K., Norway, and Switzerland, where SAIC full-electric cars are not subject to high tariffs faced by Chinese BEV imports in Europe.

MG has been focusing on hybrid and plug-in hybrid models due to the high tariffs imposed by the EU on Chinese imports. The IM5 and IM6 represent a significant shift for MG, aiming to capture a more premium segment of the market. The IM5 and IM6 are expected to be launched in the EU markets later this year.
