MetaMask Unveils 2024 Roadmap: Bitcoin, Solana Integration, Gas Fee Elimination
MetaMask, a popular self-custodial crypto wallet, has announced an ambitious roadmap for 2024, including support for Bitcoin (BTC) and Solana (SOL) DeFi, and a long-term goal to eliminate gas fees for users.
In a recent update, MetaMask's Dan Finlay revealed that the Bitcoin network will be integrated in the third quarter of 2024, while Solana will become the first non-Ethereum Virtual Machine chain supported by MetaMask in May. Additionally, gas-included swaps will be upgraded to allow users to pay with any token they hold.
MetaMask's ultimate goal is to eliminate gas as a user-facing concern in nearly all interactions. To achieve this, the wallet provider plans to implement ERC-5792, known as batched transactions, which will allow users to perform common sequences of transactions in one click, saving time and fees.
MetaMask will also transition from Externally Owned Accounts to smart-contract-based accounts, enabling new, powerful uses of user assets while improving security. Furthermore, the wallet will add a feature to manage multiple Secret Recovery Phrases from one wallet.
MetaMask's new developments have been praised by users, with some noting that the wallet has likely gained market share from competitors like Phantom and Rabby, which also support Solana.
In addition to these updates, MetaMask has launched its own crypto card, MetaMask Card, aimed at bringing crypto into the real world. Leveraging Mastercard's payment network, the card connects self-custody wallets with millions of vendors around the world. MetaMask Cards are already eligible in certain countries and showcase the company's new logo.
MetaMask's roadmap for 2024 demonstrates the wallet provider's commitment to improving user experience and expanding its offerings to support a wider range of cryptocurrencies and blockchain networks. By eliminating gas fees and simplifying transactions, MetaMask aims to make crypto more accessible and user-friendly for a broader audience.
