Meta Ventures into AI-Powered Humanoid Robots: A New Chapter in Smart Living
Meta, after significant investments in artificial intelligence and augmented reality, is now eyeing its next substantial venture: humanoid robots driven by AI. According to sources familiar with the matter, Meta has established a new team within its Reality Labs hardware division focused on the research and development of AI humanoid robots. This team will be led by Marc Whitten, who previously served as Chief Executive of Cruise, General Motors' autonomous vehicle division, and held executive roles at Unity Software and Amazon.
This strategic initiative reflects the tech giant's optimism about the humanoid robot market. Similar exploratory projects are being conducted at companies like Apple and Alphabet's DeepMind. Initially, Meta's humanoid robot endeavors will concentrate on the realm of household assistance, aiming to develop intelligent robots capable of performing routine domestic tasks. However, the company's long-term vision is more ambitious: to create a comprehensive ecosystem integrating AI, sensors, and software.
Meta has already begun engaging with robotics companies such as Unitree Robotics and Figure AI to explore potential collaborations. It is noteworthy that Meta currently does not plan to introduce its own branded robots, which means it will not be directly competing with products like Tesla's Optimus just yet. Nonetheless, Meta retains the option of launching its branded robots in the future.
As the company charts its course in the AI humanoid robot landscape, this move underscores Meta's commitment to pioneering advancements in robotics and AI technology, potentially driving the next evolution in digital interaction and smart living.
