Meta's Smart Glasses Translate Offline: A Vision of AI-Powered Global Communication
Meta has recently introduced a real-time translation feature for its Ray-Ban smart glasses, now accessible to all users and notable for its ability to function offline. This advancement supports dialog in multiple languages, namely English, French, Italian, and Spanish. Initially unveiled at the Meta Connect conference last October, this feature was rolled out in December for early adopters in selected countries.
One of the standout attributes of this translation capability is its offline functionality. Users traveling abroad can pre-download language packs, allowing for seamless utilization of the service without an internet connection. The product's operation involves the glasses translating spoken language in real-time for the wearer, while the translated output is available on the user's smartphone for the other party to read.
In addition to translation, Meta is expanding the reach of its AI capabilities within the EU region, enabling glass wearers to pose questions to AI regarding their surroundings and receive immediate responses. The enhanced utility of these glasses includes integration with popular messaging and music services. Users will soon be able to interact with Meta’s Instagram for messaging and media exchanges or utilize native SMS and call functionalities on both iPhone and Android devices. Support for music services like Apple Music is also being broadened.
While the smart glasses are not new—having been launched in their second generation in September 2023 in collaboration with Ray-Ban—they still rely on Qualcomm’s AR chip platform and feature an embedded Meta AI. At present, the glasses are available in different styles, priced between $299 and $379. Despite not supporting augmented reality functions, they provide voice interaction capabilities.
Moving forward, Meta has plans to further expand the availability of its AI glasses in markets like Mexico, India, and the UAE, although specific timelines remain unspecified. Looking ahead to the future, the company hints at the potential launch of a third-generation model, possibly within 2025, as indicated by CEO Mark Zuckerberg. He views the current year as pivotal for defining the trajectory of AI glasses, with the ultimate vision of widespread adoption across millions of units in subsequent product generations.
